So here’s The Thing with me and the couples on Downton Abbey: I love Anna and Bates. LOVE THEM. There is something so wonderful and innocent and yet really very deep about them. I do not even like speculating about them because I know that they will live happily ever after, DO NOT QUESTION THIS. I’m not very invested in Sybil and Branson because the “Rich Character X falls for Poor Character Y, star-crossed romance and sociopolitical machinations ensue” has been done to death.
BUT MARY AND MATTHEW, YOU GUYS. I just love the complexities there, as summed up by this gif. Because they’re star-crossed, but it’s entirely of their own making. They really do like each other, but Mary’s too calculating and Matthew’s too fed up to actually ever be together. And they both totally deserve to feel that way, since Mary’s future depends on who she marries and Matthew’s the eternal odd man out/chess piece. I just love the twisty way their relationship went over those six episodes.
I agree with everything you say (… Anna and Bates… sigh). When can Downton Abbey re-enter our lives?
